How Much Does a Ghostwriter Cost in 2026? Real Numbers, No Discovery Call

Ask ten ghostwriting agencies what a book costs and you will get ten discovery calls, three PDFs, and zero numbers. That practice serves the seller, not the author — it exists so the quote can be adjusted to whatever the call reveals about your budget. We publish our rates instead. The per-word taper
Ghostwriting here is billed per word, on a taper that gets cheaper as the manuscript grows:

Why a taper? Because a flat per-word rate quietly punishes long books. The expensive parts of a manuscript — finding the voice, building the architecture, the first fifty pages of trial and error — happen early. By word 90,000, the machine is running. A flat rate charges you word one's difficulty at word one hundred and forty thousand. A taper doesn't.

The number nobody itemizes: citations
If your book makes factual claims that must survive expert scrutiny, the writing is not the expensive part — the verification is. A properly verified endnote means the primary source was found, read, and checked against the sentence it supports, with identifiers and a re-check date on record. What moves your number inside a band
- Source material. Organized notes and existing talks lower cost; starting from a blank interview calendar raises it.
- Interview access. A subject who keeps interview appointments is the single cheapest accelerator there is.
- Research burden. Anything a reader could fact-check, we verify first — see above.
- Timeline. Compressed schedules cost more because they displace other work.
Red flags in cheap ghostwriting
If a quote comes in dramatically under the floor band, one of these is usually true: the "writer" is a rotating content-mill pool, the contract quietly keeps rights or royalties, or the word count is being padded to hit a page target. Read the rights clause before the price.
